The Story Academy is a builder program designed to support, mentor, and accelerate promising entrepreneurs and innovative projects building on Story. We will provide technical expertise, marketing know-how, grants, and investor network introductions matching the level of ambition and execution capability of each admitted project. If you're a visionary builder already working on or planning to build a project on top of Story, we want to talk to you. Visit https://www.storyprotocol.xyz/academy for more information.
Application Ecosystem
Tokenized IP will shape an entirely new ecosystem of applications and experiences, with ample opportunities for any role or industry vertical.
Builder Program: Story Academy
App Ideas For Builders
Builders can leverage any of Story’s SDKs (Typescript SDK, Python SDK - more coming up) and/or integrate with the underlying smart contracts directly to mint an artwork, register it as an IP and equip it with specific licensing and royalty terms in just one call, without needing to study any legalese. There’s already hundreds of teams and creatives building IP experiences on Story. Here are some ideas what you could be creating:
You can also find additional app ideas in this repository.
If you’re interested in building an application on Story, check out our Builder Program and find out how we can support you and your team on this path.
Story For Creators
As a creator, you can use our experimental playground (running on Sepolia) to register your real-world IP on Story within a few clicks. Simply connect your wallet, upload your file, give it a title and mint your IP Asset. This process can also be done using an NFT you already own on-chain.
Once your IP Asset is minted, you can choose to attach license terms to it. For now, you have three options of license terms:
Non-Commercial Social Remixing
Allows others to remix your IP into their work and distribute the remix everywhere. Any reselling of your original work or commercializing the remix, however, is not allowed.Commercial Use
This option lets others purchase the right to use your creation for a price that you set. They can display or publish the work in any medium, but they may not resell your original work or create remixes of the commercial use.Commercial Remix
Similar to the commercial use option, you can set a price for the right to use your work. Others may create remixes and distribute them anywhere. You can specify a percentage of commercial revenue share.
Once you have finished the process of registering your IP Asset and attaching license terms, open up its detail page. Besides covering the basic metadata of your asset, the detail page displays the network that revolves around your IP in the section Lineage, showing potential child IPs that others created, as well as parent IPs that you might have used to create your IPAsset.
IPFi: Using IP as a Digital Asset
Intellectual property is the world’s biggest asset class, and it’s not only Hollywood movies and billboard charts: IP means AI models, memes, game assets, voice, likeness, and so much more. The immense value of this multi trillion asset class, however, remains untapped and inaccessible for the masses; it’s stuck in an antiquated and analogue legal system that makes it illiquid and hard to participate in, while more and more other assets move to the digital sphere.
Money, for example, went beyond just being a form of payment or a store of value; with crypto, money became programmable. Today, thousands of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications allow for complex, interconnected actions that span highly specialized use cases like borrowing, lending, yield farming and much more.
Bringing IP on chain and making it programmable will open up a similar array of use cases and ecosystems for intellectual property: the birth of IPFi. Artists will be able to sell their artwork’s license tokens, for example, which in turn could then be used to borrow cryptocurrency against. In short: Story onramps the immense value of intellectual property to web3, making it a liquid, accessible and programmable digital asset. What Bitcoin did to money, Story is doing to IP.
Case Study: Magma
Magma is the multiplayer Photoshop - a suite of browser-based professional design tools that enables real-time creative collaboration for over 2M+ users. The big challenge of such a collaborative environment: How can artists make sure they are being attributed and compensated for, when others use their work?
The Magma team found Story’s tokenized IP to be the perfect solution: creatives register their work as an IP Asset with a few clicks, generating a blockchain record (ERC-721 token) for their intellectual property. With Story’s Programmable IP License (PIL) as a legal bridge, they can then seamlessly set the pricing and permission terms for how their work can be used, for example: Can others resell the work? Is it allowed to create remixes? What royalty percentage has to be taken into account? Anyone interested in using that work can then accept these legally binding terms and license it in a single click. That’s possible because every IP Asset on Story has its own token-bound account (IP Account), enabling use cases like automated royalty payments or pay-as-you-go licensing.
Case Study: Mahojin
The team of Mahojin uses Story to focus on IP tokenization for AI training data, models, and outputs. Data owners, for example, can register their work as IP Assets on Story, equipped with the license terms they favor. Because of Story’s fast finality and efficient handling of complex IP graphs, creators of AI models can then license big batches of data quickly at marginal cost to train their models. Due to the baked-in programmability of Story’s IP Assets, this can even be done in an automated fashion.
By using tokenized IP with Mahojin, data providers become an attributed and compensated part in AI content generation. Additionally, AI models themselves can be registered as IP Assets, enabling complex remixes of different AI models with fair and correct attribution.

Intellectual Property
Intellectual property is a multi-trillion-dollar asset class stuck in an antiquated legal system that makes it illiquid and inaccessible. Story frees IP by onramping it to the blockchain.
